Blue Sky, green rolling hills, meadows, glens and woods; the shallow water of the lake and the peaceful atmosphere of old hamlets perched on hilltops above the rest of the world! 6 or 8 fantastic days for discovering the very heart of Umbria! A delicious program for tasting the very best of this unique place!
Arrival in Lake Trasimeno area and accommodation in the chosen property. Welcome drink to start discovering the local delicacies and the warm welcome of the people of this place.
After a hearty breakfast we will start discovering this area from CITTA' 'DELLA PIEVE, the splendid town that gave birth to the great painter Pietro Vannucci, known as “Perugino”. The alleys of the town are a tangle, fascinating and timeless, in which to get lost for suddenly discovering amazing views over the valley, the lake and Tuscany. Surely one of the main attractions of the city is "The church of Santa Maria dei Bianchi", already Oratory of the Disciplinati which houses one of the masterpieces of Pietro Vannucci, the fresco depicting "The Adoration of the Magi".
This charming medieval town, situated on a hill-shaped plateau between the rivers Chiani and Nestore dominates the Chiana Valley and Lake Trasimeno. After a nice walk through the streets of the village, lunch in a local restaurant featuring the finest dishes of the area, among which the original "Pici with garlic", a kind of homemade spaghetti topped with a succulent sauce flavored with a variety very perfumed garlic! In the afternoon, on the way back to the hotel, we will stop in a typical wine cellar along the Wine Road of the Trasimeno to discover the characteristics of the local wines, native grape varieties and the best combination of delicacies and local wines!
We start a new day with a rich breakfast and afterward a new tour is on schedule: a boat trip to Isola Maggiore, one of the three islands of Lake Trasimeno. Isola Maggiore is a wonderful retreat from the world to admire from afar, among olive trees and wild pheasants that live freely on the island, the beauty of Umbria. After 20 minutes by ferry you will be on the island, immersed in a truly magnificent setting, remote in time and from the mainland. The Island has a pretty little fishing village where normally only 15 persons live; they preserve with pride and rigor their ancient traditions, especially those related to fishing and the lace made with an ancient Irish technique!
The tour of the island on foot, not very demanding but very charming, also leads us to discover the beautiful frescoes of the church of San Michele, dating back to the early Renaissance; this tiny church is located in the center island, not far from the ruins of the Castle Guglielmi and from the retreat where St. Francis used to pray. Lunch with local lake fish and other local products in one of the restaurants in the pretty fishermen’s village. Return by ferry in the afternoon.
After breakfast we will visit a place of great beauty and of great scientific and ecological interest, Oasi La Valle, which is a protected oasis because it represents one of the staging areas for many migratory species during the journey from Northern Europe to Northern Africa. Depending on the season you can observe different species of birds and waders and you can also take part to the “inanellamento (ringing)" of the specimens. In the afternoon we will know the Lake Trasimeno even more closely, participating to a fishing trip with local fishermen, the real fishermen of Lake Trasimeno. From the village of San Feliciano we depart in simple but authentic fishermen’s boats to put down nets and other tools in the calm waters of the lake; then we'll explore Polvese Island, the largest island in the lake that is completely uninhabited and completely green. After returning you can taste a bag of freshly caught fried fish!
After breakfast it is time to discover Perugia. The multi-ethnic and cosmopolitan capital city of Umbria is a city of great charm and old origin. With approximately 3,000 years of history it offers much to visitors. Unique and famous monuments such as the Rocca Paolina or the Fontana Maggiore, together with the unmissable National Gallery of Umbria, which exhibits works by Perugino and Pinturicchio, are a great attraction but there are lots of things to do that have made Perugia a famous city. First of all a walk through the medieval streets in search of lost time! During your spare time in town we suggest also to pay a visit to the Glass Museum; there is an old laboratory, with a tradition of 400 years, that creates stained glass for all the major cathedrals’ windows in Europa; it is hidden in the heart of Perugia. Perugia is also the city of Perugina Chocolate Factory; this is a must for chocolate lovers and for curious. The visit to the Museum of Perugina includes also a tasting (to be reserved at reservation with supplement)! For the sweet tooth, you can also book a workshop to learn how to make chocolate!
Another peculiarity of the area between the city and the lake is the production of Cashmere. A stop in one of several popular outlets of big names become a must!
